First released by Footprints in 1994, the FootRunner plug-in is a powerful custom tool that permits compiled
custom 4th Dimension applications to execute text files containing 4D code. The FootRunner plug-in, when
installed in a custom 4th Dimension database application, enables programmers to create executable 4th
Dimension method files which can be saved to disk (or as data in the database). Once created, these files
can be transmitted and executed directly by any other 4th Dimension application containing the
FootRunner plug-in. FootRunner is compatible with all versions of 4th Dimension from v6.0.0 up to the current release
and is available for both Macintosh and Windows.
Scott Gelvin, manager of intermountain operations in Salt Lake City, credits FootRunner with solving otherwise
intractable problems. “We have been able to capture code execution information allowing us to identify and resolve
issues that would have been nearly impossible without this tool.”
And John Andrews, Footprints vice president says, “As an international developer of custom software, we support clients
located anywhere in the world. FootRunner allows us to quickly provide a customer located thousands of miles away
with procedural support to repair data damage or identify and correct data errors resulting from user error, system failures
or software bugs. We simply write the code in our offices and send a small file for execution by the client.”
FootRunner 5, the latest release, includes support for local variables, parameter passing (9 maximum) and the ability to
execute 4D code embedded within HTML pages. The FootRunner 5 plug-in package, when installed in a custom 4th
Dimension database application, enables programmers to create executable 4th Dimension method files which can be
saved to disk (or as data in the database) and executed later. Once created, these files can be transmitted and executed
directly by any other 4th Dimension application containing the FootRunner 5 plug-in. FootRunner 5 is compatible with all
versions of 4th Dimension from v6.0 up to the current release and is available for Macintosh (including Mac OS X) and
Windows.
An updated developer manual describes functionality and includes numerous suggestions and sample code to whet the
developer's appetite for practical use of FootRunner 5, each based on Footprints' own experience in developing and
supporting its clients' custom information systems.
